Why I Built This Site

I started doing M2M cellular work in 2004, when GPRS was the technology and most “antennas” were rubber stubs that came in the box. I spent the first couple of years learning the hard way that the stub antenna was almost always the wrong choice.

The spec sheet said the modem had -107 dBm receive sensitivity. The carrier had 99% population coverage. The field installation had one bar. The reason, almost every time: the antenna. Wrong type, wrong position, wrong cable, wrong connector sealing. The antenna.

By 2008 I had developed a systematic approach to antenna selection and installation for UK cellular IoT. By 2012, antenna specification was a significant part of my consulting work — clients would call specifically to have me sort out an installation that had been flaky since commissioning.

What I Do

I specify and supply antennas for UK IoT and M2M deployments. I work with system integrators, hardware OEMs, and end users who need the right antenna for a specific application and do not want to work through a distributor who does not know the technical detail.

I do not have a large product catalogue. I stock and supply the products I actually recommend: Poynting XPOL series, QuWireless integrated enclosures, Taoglas GNSS and embedded, Panorama vehicle range, and selected other products where I have hands-on field experience.

If I have not tested something personally, I will tell you. If something I stock has a known weakness, I will tell you. I have no interest in selling you the wrong product — it costs me more in support time than the margin.

Technical Background

20 years of UK cellular field work covers a lot of ground. Deployments I have done antenna work on include: canal boat and narrowboat cellular connectivity, agricultural IoT (combine harvesters, livestock monitoring, soil sensors), construction site temporary connectivity, CCTV tower installations, industrial edge computing, fleet tracking, smart city infrastructure, oil and gas remote monitoring, port and marine facilities.

I have done installations at sea level in saltwater environments and at altitude on wind turbine access towers. I have connected devices in nuclear facility control rooms (Faraday cages), in underground car parks, and in metal shipping containers. The constraints change. The antenna physics do not.

iotportl.co.uk and iotantenna.co.uk

I also write for iotportal.co.uk, a broader IoT technical reference covering routers, SIMs, edge computing, and network infrastructure. iotantenna.co.uk focuses specifically on antenna selection and installation — the part of the stack that is most often specified incorrectly and least often discussed in detail.

Everything I publish is written from field experience. I do not accept sponsored content. I do not take advertising. I do not do affiliate link deals with distributors. The only commercial relationship is direct: I sell the products I recommend, at transparent prices, with technical support that is worth having.
