UK Mobile Networks for IoT 2026
EE, O2, Vodafone, Three compared for IoT deployments. Coverage, bands, NB-IoT, LTE-M, 5G SA status. The honest guide.
UK Operator IoT Capability Comparison 2026
| Operator | 4G Rural | NB-IoT | LTE-M | 5G NSA | 5G SA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EE (BT) | Excellent | Yes | Yes | Yes | Limited |
| O2 (VMO2) | Good | Yes | Yes | Yes | Nationwide 2025 |
| Vodafone | Good | Yes | Yes | Yes | Limited |
| Three UK | Moderate | Yes | Limited | Yes | Limited |
EE (BT Mobile)
EE has the strongest geographic 4G coverage in the UK, covering approximately 99% of the UK population and strong rural and motorway coverage. Band 20 (800 MHz) and Band 28 (700 MHz) provide the best rural penetration. EE is the first choice for deployments requiring nationwide coverage including genuinely rural locations.
EE NB-IoT coverage aligns with their 4G B20 footprint — strong nationally. LTE-M was launched in 2022 and coverage continues to expand.
O2 (Virgin Media O2)
O2 has good urban and suburban coverage. Notable for launching nationwide 5G SA in 2025, making it the first UK operator with standalone 5G at scale. NB-IoT and LTE-M both available nationally. O2 is strong in urban and suburban deployments and the first choice for 5G SA IoT applications.
Vodafone
Vodafone has strong coverage in England and parts of Scotland. Band 8 (900 MHz) provides good rural penetration. Vodafone has a strong enterprise IoT proposition with managed connectivity services. Their NB-IoT network is well-established. For enterprise IoT with managed SLA requirements, Vodafone is a credible choice.
Three UK
Three has the strongest 5G n78 spectrum holdings of any UK operator (100 MHz in some areas) giving them the highest 5G throughput potential. However rural coverage remains their weakness. Three is the best choice for high-throughput 5G IoT in urban and suburban areas.
